Johnny Depp is to produce and star in the film adaptation of Hunter S Thompson's autobiographical novel 'The Rum Diary'.
Thompson wrote the book - which is loosely based on his time in the 1950s working as a journalist in Puerto Rico - in 1959 but it was not published until 1998.
Oscar-winning producer Graham King's GK Films has acquired the rights to the book, which King will produce with Depp for Warner Independent Pictures. Advertisement
Depp will also star as Paul Kemp, a journalist writing for a rundown newspaper in San Juan alongside a motley self-destructive crew.
Bruce Robinson ('Withnail & I') is writing the adapted screenplay and will direct.
