Depp's Rum Diary Coming Closer / Gallery Down
Aug 06, 2007 by Natalie

Johnny Depp is to produce and star in the film adaptation of Hunter S Thompson's autobiographical novel 'The Rum Diary'.

Thompson wrote the book - which is loosely based on his time in the 1950s working as a journalist in Puerto Rico - in 1959 but it was not published until 1998.

Oscar-winning producer Graham King's GK Films has acquired the rights to the book, which King will produce with Depp for Warner Independent Pictures.

Depp will also star as Paul Kemp, a journalist writing for a rundown newspaper in San Juan alongside a motley self-destructive crew.

Bruce Robinson ('Withnail & I') is writing the adapted screenplay and will direct.

Johnny Depp to Remake 'Dark Shadows'
Jul 29, 2007 by Natalie

Some forty odd years ago a soap opera began its run, which would eventually take it to 1245 episodes by the time it went off the air in 1971. But this was no garden variety soap opera. This was "Dark Shadows".

According to trade magazine Variety, via Filmstalker, Johnny Depp's production company Infinitum-Nihil, GK Films, and Warner Bros. have signed a deal with the estate of the late Dan Curtis, and secured the rights to develop a feature film based on the show. Depp and Graham King will produce with David Kennedy, who ran Dan Curtis Prods. until Curtis' death. There’s no word on who would direct, and indeed no word on whether Mr Depp would take on the signature role of Barnabas Collins himself. But it would seem the obvious choice, especially considering his personal attachment to the character:

Depp has said in interviews that he has always been obsessed with "Dark Shadows" and had, as a child, wanted to be Barnabas Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series.

'Pirates of the Caribbean' TV Show?
Jul 23, 2007 by Natalie

Johnny Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean character Jack Sparrow will be featured in a new television series.

Disney is reportedly planning to make a TV spin-off of the swashbuckling franchise with Sparrow as its main character.

A source tells British newspaper The Daily Star, "The idea is that we focus on a much younger Jack Sparrow and show fans how he became a famous pirate.

"The film has been such a success with spin-offs such as toys and video games and books, it only seems right to do a TV series."

It is hoped a host of high-profile celebrities will provide the voice over for the series. The source adds, "Since the film attracted guests like Keith Richards, you can imagine the stars who will want to pop up in the television show."
